Prayer for Wednesday (Pioneer Day)

Today is Pioneer Day for Mormons, especially in Utah. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan continues today.

You have succeeded in life
when all you really want
is only what you really need.
~ Vernon Howard

Dear God,

We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.

We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.

We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom,
of joy, inspiration, and renewal,
places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging.
Let us search for these places in the world,
in ourselves, and in others.
Let us restore them. Let us strengthen and protect them,
and let us create them.

May we mend this outer world
according to the truth of our inner life
and may our souls be shaped
and nourished by nature’s eternal wisdom.

Amen

(Michael Leunig)

Prayer for Saturday

Nature is pleased with simplicity.
And nature is no dummy.
~ Isaac Newton

Just For Today

Lord, for tomorrow and its needs, I do not pray;
Keep me, my God, from stain and sin,
Just for today.

Let me both diligently work and duly pray.
Let me be kind in word and deed,
Just for today.

Let me be slow to do my will, prompt to obey;
Help me sacrifice myself,
Just for today

And if today my tide of life should ebb away;
Give me thy Sacraments divine,
Sweet Lord, today.

So for tomorrow and its need I do not pray,
But keep me, guide me, love me, Lord,
Just for today.

Prayer for Friday

The more simple we are,
the more complete we become.
~ August Rodin

Two things I asked of You,
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep deception and lies far from me,
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion,
That I not be full and deny You and say
“Who is the Lord?”
Or that I not be in want and steal,
And profane the name of my God.

(Proverbs 30:7-9)

Prayer for Thursday

The simplest things are often the truest.
~ Richard Bach

Almighty and all powerful God,
We fill our lives with work, projects, and pleasures
and we have become weighted down.
Lord, we confess that we too often align contentment with mediocrity.
We have allowed our lives to be anchored to a debt of materialism
rather than to You.
Let us unclutter our lives, unbind our hearts,
and seek you first.
Liberate us, let nothing separate us;
let nothing come between our soul and You.
Amen.

Prayer for Wednesday

Be content with what you have,
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.
~ Lao Tzu, author of the Tao Te Ching

Lord, let us empty of all doctrines,
The Tao is wisdom eternally inexhaustible.
Fathomless for the mere intellect,
The Tao is the law wherewith all things come into being.

It blunts the edges of the intellect,
Untangles the knots of the mind,
Softens the glare of thinking,
And settles the dust of thought.

Transparent yet invisible,
The Tao exists like deep pellucid water.
Its origin is unknown,
For it existed before Heaven and Earth

(Lao Tzu)

Prayer for Tuesday

If you can’t explain it to a six year old,
you don’t understand it yourself.

Simplicity Prayer

God, it is true that I cannot serve both possessions and you. Neither can I give my abiding presence to both the things I own and the people I love.

You allow me to work for gain, yet if acquisitiveness is my purpose, my work will never satisfy my heart and mind.

Help me to live simply. Help me limit my possessions and the many distractions of these times, because I am too weak to live lavishly and keep my priorities straight.

God, grant me a spirit of peaceful simplicity, that I may joyfully and
thoughtfully live my life for your sake and in the fellowship of others.

Prayer for Monday

Live simply that others might simply live.
~ Elizabeth Ann Seton

O Lord! Unto Thee I repair for refuge, and toward all Thy signs I set my heart.

O Lord! Whether traveling or at home, and in my occupation or in my work, I place my whole trust in Thee.

Grant me then Thy sufficing help so as to make me independent of all things, O Thou Who art unsurpassed in Thy mercy!

Bestow upon me my portion, O Lord, as Thou pleasest, and cause me to be satisfied with whatsoever Thou hast ordained for me.

Thine is the absolute authority to command.
