Sing a new song…. (Adoration and Praise)

Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
~ Psalm 105:1-2

I have spent the last week and a half looking briefly at prayer from different religious traditions. Starting today I am going to look at different types of prayer and post examples from different traditions of each type over a week to 10 days. I know I am benefiting from this exercise and I hope you will too. – JAC

Adoration [noun] 1. the act of paying honor, as to a divine being / worship;
2. reverent homage; 3. fervent and devoted love.

Prayers of praise and adoration are found in almost every religious tradition, from Jewish Psalms to Hindu Bhajans, Christian Hymns to the Muslim takbir. These types of prayer are said, chanted, or sung to simply praise the Supreme Being(s) and extol the love, compassion, greatness, and/or power of the worshiper’s Deity.

1 Sing a new song to the Lord!
Sing to the Lord, all the world!
2 Sing to the Lord, and praise him!
Proclaim every day the good news that he has saved us.
3 Proclaim his glory to the nations,
his mighty deeds to all peoples.

4 The Lord is great and is to be highly praised;
he is to be honored more than all the gods.
5 The gods of all other nations are only idols,
but the Lord created the heavens.
6 Glory and majesty surround him;
power and beauty fill his Temple.

7 Praise the Lord, all people on earth;
praise his glory and might.
8 Praise the Lord’s glorious name;
bring an offering and come into his Temple.

(Psalm 96:1-8 [GNT])

Prayer for Wednesday

The true object of all human life is play.
~ G. K. Chesterton

Compose new songs of praise to him, accompanied skillfully on the harp; sing joyfully.

For all God’s words are right, and everything he does is worthy of our trust. He loves whatever is just and good; the earth is filled with his tender love. He merely spoke, and the heavens were formed and all the galaxies of stars. He made the oceans, pouring them into his vast reservoirs.

(Psalm 33:3-7 [TLB])

This Week’s Affirmation:

“I attract fun and amusing experiences.”

Prayer for Thursday (Rosh Hoshanah)

Today is the first full day of Rosh Hoshanah, the Jewish New Year.

Whatever God does is for the best.
~ Rabbi Akiba

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
The Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.

Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will extol you.
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

(from Psalm 118)

As hopefulness becomes a habit,
you can achieve a permanently happy spirit.
~ Norman Vincent Peale

I pray to you, O God, because you answer me;
so turn to me and listen to my words.
Reveal your wonderful love and save me;
at your side I am safe from my enemies.
Protect me as you would your very eyes;
hide me in the shadow of your wings.

Prayer for Tuesday (Last Day of Pesach)

The Jewish holiday of Pesach, or Passover, ends at sundown today.

When you arise in the morning,
give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.
Give thanks for your food, and the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies with yourself.
~ Tecumseh, Shawnee

Look on me with a heart of mercy, O God,
according to Your generous love.
According to Your great compassion,
wipe out every consequence of my shameful crimes.
Thoroughly wash me, inside and out, of all my crooked deeds.
Cleanse me from my sins.

Cleanse me of my wickedness with hyssop, and I will be clean.
If You wash me, I will be whiter than snow.
Help me hear joy and happiness as my accompaniment,
so my bones, which You have broken, will dance in delight instead.
Cover Your face so You will not see my sins,
and erase my guilt from the record.

Create in me a clean heart, O God;
restore within me a sense of being brand new.
Do not throw me far away from Your presence,
and do not remove Your Holy Spirit from me.
Give back to me the deep delight of being saved by You;
let Your willing Spirit sustain me.

O Lord, pry open my lips
that this mouth will sing joyfully of Your greatness.
I would surrender my dearest possessions or destroy all that I prize to prove my regret,
but You don’t take pleasure in sacrifices or burnt offerings.
What sacrifice I can offer You is my broken spirit
because a broken spirit, O God,
a heart that honestly regrets the past,
You won’t detest.

(Psalm 51:1-2,7-12,15-17 [The Voice])

This Week’s Affirmation:

“I am God’s Child and I am perfect just as I am.”

Prayer for Sunday (Purim)

Today is the Jewish holiday of Purim. Today is the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee, the first Sunday in the Orthodox Christian Triodion.

Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion
cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.
~ Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Praise the Lord from heaven,
you that live in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels,
all his heavenly armies.

Praise him, sun and moon;
praise him, shining stars.
Praise him, highest heavens,
and the waters above the sky.

Let them all praise the name of the Lord!
He commanded, and they were created;
by his command they were fixed in their places forever,
and they cannot disobey.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
sea monsters and all ocean depths;
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
strong winds that obey his command.

Praise him, hills and mountains,
fruit trees and forests;
all animals, tame and wild,
reptiles and birds.

Praise him, kings and all peoples,
princes and all other rulers;
young women and young men,
old people and children too.

Let them all praise the name of the Lord!
His name is greater than all others;
his glory is above earth and heaven.

(Psalm 148:1-13)
