Prayer for Thursday (Hola Mohala)

Today is the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla. The Jewish holiday of Pesach, or Passover, continues today.

Don’t fret about your life – what you’re going to eat and drink –
or about your body – what you’re going to wear.
There is more to living than food and clothing, isn’t there?
Take a look at the birds of the sky:
they don’t plant or harvest, or gather into barns.
Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. You’re worth more than they, aren’t you?
Can any one of you add one hour to life by fretting about it?
~ Jesus (the Jesus Seminar translation)

Mool Mantra and 1st Pauri of Japji Sahib

There is One God
He is the supreme truth.
He, The Creator,
Is without fear and without hate,
He, The Omnipresent,
Pervades the universe.
He is not born,
Nor does He die to be born again,
By His grace shalt thou worship Him.

Before time itself
There was truth,
When time began to run its course
He was the truth.
Even now, He is the truth
And Evermore shall truth prevail.

Not by thought alone
Can He be Known,
Though one think
A hundred thousand times;
Not in solemn silence
Nor in deep meditation.
Though fasting yields an
Abundance of virtue
It cannot appease the hunger for truth,
No, by none of these,
Nor by a hundred thousand other devices,
Can God be reached.
How then shall the Truth be known?
How the veil of false illusion torn?
O Nanak, thus runneth the writ divine,
The righteous path – let it be thine.

(Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, 1st Sikh Guru)

Prayer for Saturday (Vaisakhi)

Today is the Sikh holiday of Vaisakhi. It is also the day Hindus celebrate the beginning of the solar new year.

“True Bliss is experienced when ego is non-existent. True Bliss fills the void created by the exit of ego, of total surrender of ego at the lotus feet of the Lord. With ego surrendered, there is no more seeking, all desires disappear, the Sweet Will and Bliss of the Lord takes over.” ~ Guru Granth Sahib

The Lord is the Truth Absolute,
True is His Name.
His language is love infinite;
His creatures ever cry to Him;
‘Give us more, O Lord, give more’;
The Bounteous One gives unwearyingly.

What then should we offer
That we might see His Kingdom?
With what language
Might we His love attain?

In the ambrosial hours of fragrant dawn
Think upon and glorify
His Name and greatness.
Our own past actions
Have put this garment on us,
But salvation comes only through His Grace.

O Nanak, this alone need we know,
That God, being Truth, is the one Light of all.

(Guru Nanak, 1st Sikh Guru)

Today is the Sikh festival of Hola Mohalla.

May the kingdom of justice prevail!
May the believers be united in love!
May the hearts of the believers be humble, high their wisdom,
And may they be guided in their wisdom by the Lord.

Glory be to God!
Entrust unto the Lord what you wish to be accomplished.
The Lord will bring all matters to fulfillment.
Know this as truth evidenced by Himself.

Prayer for Tuesday (Birthday of Guru Har Dai)

There is no counting the number of fools,
No counting the thieves and fraudsters,
No counting those who shed innocent blood,
No counting the adulterers and the traitors,
No counting the liars who take pleasure in deceit,
No counting those who spread malice and hatred.
I do not put myself above any of those people, I am the lowliest of the low.

I have nothing to offer you, O Lord.
My life is not even worth sacrificing to you.
All I can do is try to obey your will.
All I want is to abide in your peace.

(Guru Nanak Dev)

Prayer for Tuesday

O lord, I love the saints of every faith:

I put away my pride.
I remember the essence of religion
Is meekness and sympathy,
Not fine clothes,
Not the person’s attire and ashes,
Not the blowing of the horns,
Not the shaven head,
Not long prayers,
Not recitations and torturing,
Not the ascetic way,
But a life of goodness and purity amid the world’s temptation.

(Guru Nanak Dev)

Today’s Affirmation:

“I use my own blessed, personal power wisely.”

Prayer for Thursday (Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Birthday)

Guru Nanak was the founder of the Sikh religion.

God is One. His Name Is Truth. Creative Being,
without Fear, without Hatred. He never dies.
He is Beyond Birth, Self-Existent.
By The Guru’s Grace The Truth is Obtained.

Recite:
God was True in the beginning.
He was True in the Primal Age.
He is True now Also.
O Nanak, True Shall God be Forever.

(Mool Mantra, Jup 1:1-3, Guru Granth Sahib)

When You stand over our heads, O Lord and Master, how can we suffer in pain?
The mortal being does not know how to chant Your Name – he is intoxicated with the wine of Maya, and the thought of death does not even enter his mind.
O my Sovereign Lord, You belong to the Saints, and the Saints belong to You.
Your servant is not afraid of anything; the Messenger of Death cannot even approach him.
Those who are attuned to Your Love, O my Lord and Master, are released from the pains of birth and death.
No one can erase Your Blessings; the True Guru has given me this assurance.
Those who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, obtain the fruits of peace. Twenty-four hours a day, they worship and adore You.
In Your Sanctuary, with Your Support, they subdue the five villains.
I know nothing about wisdom, meditation and good deeds; I know nothing about Your excellence.
Guru Nanak is the greatest of all; He saved my honor in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga.

(an Amrit Kirtan from Raag Soohee, Guru Granth Sahib)

Today’s Affirmation:

“I always give my best.
As a result, I always attract the best.”

Prayer for Monday (Birthday of Guru Har Rai)

Countless are your names, countless your dwelling-places;
The breadth of your kingdom is beyond our imagination.
Even to try and imagine your kingdom is foolish.
Yet through words and through music
We speak your name and sing your praise.
Words are the only tools we have to proclaim your greatness,
And music our only means of echoing your virtue.

You put words in our hearts and minds.
With words we can describe the glory of your creation,
And so our words can reflect your glory.
You put music in our hearts and minds.
With music we can echo the beauty of heaven,
And so our music can express our deepest wish.

How can someone as insignificant as me
Express the vastness and wonder of your creation?
How can someone as sinful as me
Dare to hope for a place in heaven?

My only answer lies in the words and the music
Which you yourself have given me.

(Guru Nanak [1469-1538, Founder of Sikh religion])
