Jesus, the Light of the World,…

The celebration of Kwanzaa continues today.

Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings,
all the snow in Alaska won’t make it ‘white’.
~ Bing Crosby

Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth may we begin to see the world in the light of the understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving.
Amen.

Glory to You, O Christ… [Kwanzaa]

The African-American festival of Kwanzaa continues today.

You have to remind kids to stay connected to the meaning of Christmas.
Sometimes it takes a little bit of effort, but it’s so worth it.
~ Caroline Kennedy

Glory to You, O Christ our God, glory to You!

May Christ our True God, whose Nativity we celebrate, through the intercessions of His holy and pure Mother, through the power of the life-giving Cross, through the protection of the Angelic Powers, through the prayers of St. John the Baptist, the supplications of the Holy Apostles, Martyrs, Fathers and Mothers of our Faith, and all the saints, have mercy on us and save us.

Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy on us and save us.

(Orthodox Christmas prayer 1)

1 The majority of Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7th.

Lord, in this holy season… [Christmas]

Today is the holiday of Christmas for western Christian traditions. The Hopi & Zuni Festival of Soyala continues today.

Christmas is a season for kindling the fire for hospitality in the hall,
the genial flame of charity in the heart.
~ Washington Irving

Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel’s song, for infant’s cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance.

Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wise men. Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen.

Christmas Eve Prayer

Loving God, Help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate
and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,
and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake.
Amen.

Dear God, I come to You…

The Hopi & Zuni Festival of Soyala continues today.

Christmas, my child, is love in action.
Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.
~ Dale Evans

Dear God,
I come to You in the spirit of the season, filled with love and grateful for Your guidance. “Love one another” You say. And I do. In a world filled with violence and evil, it’s not always easy. Yet I need only to close my eyes and feel Your love swelling up from the belly of my soul and I know – I love my brother. I love my sister. I love every living thing of Your creation.
Amen

Prayer for Wednesday (Holy Innocents)

I posted this last year on Holy Innocents and I cannot think of a better way to recognize this day than reposting it today. I have included the YouTube video featuring The King’s Singers in this post instead of separately as I did last year.

Children Holding Hands Around the World Prayer of the Children
Praying children around the world

Can you hear the prayer of the children
on bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room?
Empty eyes with no more tears to cry
turning heavenward toward the light.
Crying,” Jesus, help me
to see the morning light of one more day,
but if I should die before I wake,
I pray my soul to take.”

Can you feel the hearts of the children
aching for home, for something of their very own.
Reaching hands with nothing to hold onto
but hope for a better day, a better day.
Crying,” Jesus, help me
to feel the love again in my own land,
but if unknown roads lead away from home,
give me loving arms, away from harm.”

Can you hear the voice of the children
softly pleading for silence in their shattered world?
Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate,
blood of the innocent on their hands.
Crying,” Jesus, help me
to feel the sun again upon my face?
For when darkness clears, I know you’re near,
bringing peace again.”

Dali čujete sve dječje molitve?

Can you hear the prayer of the children?

(words and music written by Kurt Bestor)

O God, we thank You for the blessing of children in the world, for their beauty, innocence and laughter. Help us to remember that when we see a child, we are seeing Your face.

Bless all the children of the world, Lord, keep them close in Your heart. God, bless the souls of the children who continue to suffer day-to-day. Please be with them and heal their broken hearts and rescue them from all suffering and abuse. And we ask You to bless all those children who are close to us….

May we end the wars and suffering of the world by ending the wars and suffering in our own hearts through love and forgiveness. May you all hear the prayers of the children and do your part to make them come true. Amen.

Prayer for Sunday (Christmas)

(Today Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. This holiday is also known as the Feast of the Nativity, especially in Orthodox Christian traditions.)

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
~ John 1:14

How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is giv’n;
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heav’n.
No ear may hear His coming, but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

(From “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” by Philip Brooks)

Father God, When your precious Son became a tiny baby in a stable in Bethlehem in poverty and simplicity, you changed our world. As we imagine those surroundings, we join with the shepherds and the wise men in wonder and praise. We thank you for our material lives, praise you for our spiritual lives, and trust in you for our eternal life. Amen.

Christ born in a stable is born in me
Christ accepted by shepherds accepts me
Christ receiving the wise men receives me
Christ revealed to the nations be revealed in me
Christ dwelling in Nazareth You dwell in me
Christ, grant that people may look at me
and see Your Presence. Amen
