Prayer for Thursday (Sun Dance Ceremony)

Today begins the Sun Dance Ceremony celebrated by the Sioux Nations and other North American Plains tribes.

And I saw that the sacred hoop of my people was one of many hoops that made one circle, wide as daylight and as starlight, and in the center grew one mighty flowering tree to shelter all the children of one mother and one father. And I saw that it was holy.
~ Black Elk

The Sun, the Light of the World,
I hear Him coming
I see His face as He comes
He makes the beings on earth happy,
And they rejoice
O Wakan-Tanka, I offer You this World of Light.

(from The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk’s account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux by Joseph E. Brown [1953])
